eReaders

Most major publishers operate according to an "agency model," in which they set the price to the consumer and ALL retailers (indies, chains, Amazon) agree to sell that e-book at that price to the consumer.

This means that most of our eBooks sell at the same price as Amazon sells them.

If you're considering buying or asking for an e-reader, we encourage you to acquire one that lets you buy ebooks from us and from other independent stores. Though we believe that physical books provide a superior experience for the reader, we want to be able to offer literature across all platforms, so we will be up and running with ebooks in December 2011.

The traditional Kindle is the only device that will not allow you to buy books from Gibson's.  (Kindle users must get ebooks from Amazon.) We encourage readers to consider other devices if they want to investigate this new technology. Anything other than the traditional Kindle is fine with us--even the Kindle Fire, which allows you to sideload the IndieBound app: http://www.indiebound.org/reader. (For more info on this, see below.)

Our eBooks are sourced directly from the publisher, and distributed by Google eBooks TM to make them easy to download.

Google eBooks use Abobe eBook DRM (Digital Rights Management). Google decided to use Adobe's Content Server because it is the most widely adopted eBook DRM that allows users to avoid being locked in to a single device or retailer when purchasing eBooks.

You can easily use these devices to read Google eBooks :

  • Tablets
  • Nook (Barnes & Nobles)
  • Droids
  • Computers

A full list of supported devices is available here.

You may need to download the proper app to read eBooks on your particular device, but most such apps are free. Adobe Digital Editions software (used on many devices) is freely available for download from Adobe here.

You do need to have or sign up for a Google account to download Google eBooks, but you do not need to have a Gmail (Google Mail) account to use your downloaded eBooks. Google accounts are free.

You need to have a Google Account in order to buy a Google eBook because the digital book will "live" in the cloud, or Google servers. All your eBook purchases will be stored in the same place and associated with that specific Google Account. Creating a Google Account is free, and you don't have to have a GMail address for that. For more information, please read here.

Google eBooks are not downloaded to a computer or device. Rather, they are stored on a Google server, and a reader accesses the e-book from that server on any web-capable computer or device.

The “everywhere at once” nature of this data access is commonly referred to as “the cloud.”

• Google eBooks can be viewed in any web browser, as well as on the Sony Reader and the Nook.
• Google has made reading apps available for multi-function devices, such as the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and Android.
• Any customer with an existing Google Account, for example, Gmail, Google calendar, etc., is already set up to access Google eBooks.

Da Vinci's Ghost, The Mindful Carnivore, and an evening of poetry, all this week. February 14th, 2012
Many of you will remember our great event last year with Toby Lester, as he came to town to talk about his book, The Fourth Part of the World. Well, he's coming back, this time to talk about his new book on Da Vinci. Read all about it here.  If you were wondering what to read after The Swerve, which explored the beginnings of the Renaissance, perhaps you've found your answer.  That's this Wednesday at Red River!
More upcoming events: excellent NH poet Neil English headlines  the monthly meeting of the NH Poetry Society, also this Wednesday, Feb. 15, and Tovar Cerulli tells us why he changed from being a vegan to being a Mindful Carnivore, Feb. 16. ... I've just finished...
