Father and son novelists Michael and Daniel Palmer will be appearing at the Red River Theatre with their own particular brand of music and literary mayhem.
Michael is the NT Times best-selling author of 16 medical and political thrillers, including The Patient and A Heartbeat Away. He will be discussing his journey from country doctor to internationally best selling writer, and signing copies of his newest thriller, Oath of Office, which deals with genetically modified food and the fallout when a well-respected rural GP goes on a murderous rampage. In addition to his writing, the senior Palmer is an associate director of the Massachusetts Medical Society's Physician Health Services, caring for doctors with mental illness, physical illness, behavioral issues and substance addiction including alcohol.

Publisher's Weekly has called Oath of Office "A suspenseful thriller," and adds, "Palmer's easy mix of science and individual courage should please his many fans."

Kirkus reviews says, "This thriller raises compelling issues and features a likable hero."

New Hampshire resident Daniel Palmer is a former e-commerce pioneer, singer-songwriter (two CDs), and the author of the critically-acclaimed cyberthriller Delirious. In his new book, Helpless, former Navy Seal Tom Hawkins returns to his hometown of Shiloh, NH as the girls' high school soccer coach after his ex-wife is murdered, so that he can raise his teenage daughter. But when he is accused on line of having an affair with one of his players, and becomes the prime suspect in his ex-wife's death, he must fight for his life and to discover the truth. Helpless, which deals in part with the issue of teen sexting, has received starred reviews from Library Journal and Publisher's Weekly, as well as four and a half stars from Romantic Times.

The Associated Press raves, "Palmer has a gift with realistic characters — and a writing style that guarantees a sleepless night."

Michael Palmer’s 17th novel is a medical/political thriller that introduces Dr. Lou Welcome. Lou is a 42-year-old ER doc in Washington D.C., who lost his medical license for an alcohol and drug addiction and, subsequently, lost his marriage as well. After five sober years, Lou is hired as a part time case-worker for the D.C. Physician Wellness Office (PWO), monitoring docs with mental illness. He advocates for his favorite client, Dr. John Meacham, to return to practice, only to have Meacham blow up at a patient and murder five people before shooting himself. Lou’s efforts to help Meacham are hindered by a series of unexplainable mistakes and bizarre behaviors in Meacham’s community.

First Lady Dr. Darlene Mallory is a pediatrician and wife of 2-year president Martin Mallory. She is trying to help her friend Russ Evans, who resigned as Secretary of Agriculture after an indiscretion in a motel with an underage woman. Evans claims to have been set up and Darlene believes him. She is contacted by a mysterious man who claims to have proof of Evans’ innocence and that Evans was forced out of office because of his policies against genetically modified food. Against her husband’s wishes, she sets out to clear Evans’ name.

Darlene’s efforts bring her together with Lou, who has become convinced that people are being adversely affected by the rapidly growing corn being produced and harvested by a huge, powerful corporation. Their feelings for one another intensify as they race against the clock, trying to stop a massive shipment of the genetically modified corn bound for worldwide distribution.

In HELPLESS, former Navy Seal Tom Hawkins has moved back to Shilo, New Hampshire after nine years, and his return has not been a welcome one. Tom has returned to raise his teenage daughter, Jill, following the murder of his ex-wife, Kelly. Shilo’s police sergeant makes it clear that Tom is his chief suspect in Kelly’s death, and with what seems like mounting social media evidence including anonymous blog posts and Internet rumors against Tom, there may just be no way to prove his innocence.

Soon the FBI and police are investigating Tom for what appears to be a very disturbing and unprecedented series of crimes. Someone is out to frame Tom—someone capable of destroying everything he loves without laying a finger on him. As he races to prove his innocence, he must unravel a tangle of lies about his family, the friends and colleagues he thought he knew, and his past.

Daniel writes the best kind of thrillers – those with which his readers can immediately identify. His thrillers offer the reader a unique point of view in that he focuses on the "everyman" and illustrates how through a single –unexpected-event an entire life becomes unglued.

What kind of sidelines/gift items would you like to see at Gibson's? Plus upcoming author events. May 9th, 2012
A lot of bookstores look more like gift shops now. Gibson's will never go very far in that direction, but it's true we could do a LOT MORE with non-book items.
What would you like to see us add when we move into a larger space next year? A broader line of greeting cards? More funny gift items? (We know where to get The Funny, and it isn't well represented downtown.)  Should we have a serious stationery section--elegant (but not too expensive) paper and writing materials? How about educational materials, toys, games, more stuff for kids?
We'll have room for a lot of new lines. Please let us know what you think--what directions you'd like to see our non-book inventory move in--what products you'd love to see downtown. Email me with your thoughts. Thank you!
