vote first or die cover artIn 2016, New Hampshire was the site of Donald Trump’s first primary state victory, paving the way for his shocking march to the White House. Defying almost all of the pundits and longtime observers of New Hampshire politics, Trump won the state with a “big league” national media strategy, largely eschewing the small-scale town hall meetings and retail politicking that has defined the New Hampshire primary for decades.

author Scott ConroyFor a state that has always prided itself on "giving the little guy a chance" and making candidates "look voters in the eye," how will New Hampshire fight back against perceptions that the first-in-the-nation primary has outlived its usefulness in the Trump era when presidential politics seems to have become nationalized?

In his new book, Vote First Or Die, Scott Conroy chronicles the fascinating history of the New Hampshire primary over the last century and how the 2016 primary campaign may have changed everything.

He’ll discuss what happened in 2016 and what New Hampshire must do to make its case heading into the 2020 cycle when the state is likely to find its special status coming under attack like never before.

Scott Conroy is the author of Vote First Or Die (PublicAffairs, 2017) and has spent more time in New Hampshire than any other state over the course of covering three presidential campaign cycles as a reporter for The Huffington Post, RealClearPolitics and CBS News. He is the co-creator and executive producer of Embeds on Verizon’s go90 platform. He is also the coauthor of the Sarah Palin biography Sarah From Alaska (PublicAffairs, 2009) and created and directed New Hampshire, a seven-part Huffington Post original documentary series about life on the 2016 trail in the first-in-the-nation primary state.

New Hampshire-a small state with a small, distinct population-is nevertheless the beacon of American democracy. Since 1920, its residents have been the first in the nation to cast their votes in the presidential primaries. History has shown that if you want to be commander in chief, you have to win, or at least place a strong second, in New Hampshire.
