Selections
(Updated 2/19/08)

  • We'd like to mention our Gibson's Select program. It's a provocative mixture of 20-30 staff picks, unusual finds, and bestsellers that (frankly) have been overpriced by their publishers. Each book in the program has been discounted 20% to signify our commitment to the book.
  • Our Select program is only a sample of the great bargains and unexpected pleasures you can find by browsing through our shelves, and engaging our staff in conversation. Here's a few of the books now on the list, which is updated regularly. Just click on the cover art or the link to be taken to the publisher's website for further descriptions and reviews:

People of the Book

Geraldine Brooks

In this, Brooks's first novel since winning the Pulizer for March, she artfully reimagines the history of the Sarajevo Haggadah--traces this beautiful illustrated text across the centuries, as it touches the lives of people throughout some of the worst times in our history.  Romantic in the best sense of the word, with more than a trace of Dan Brown thrown in.

Publisher price: $25.95

Gibson's price: $20.76

The Reserve

Russell Banks

A novel of romance and intrigue on an international canvas from one of our greatest stylists and the only nationally known author to have lived above Concord's Apple Tree Bookstore-- Russell Banks. Set in a world as far from Affliction as can be, The Reserve demonstrates Banks's versatility and mastery of character.

Publisher price: $24.95

Gibson's price: $19.96

House Lust

Daniel McGinn

So much of our personal identity is tied up in our homes (and our cars, but that's a different book) that it's hard to tell where our personalities end and our marble countertops begin. But this new national pastime--House Lust--has taken its toll on our wallets, our relationships, our national wealth, and our sanity. How did we get to this point, and what's next?

Publisher price: $24.95

Gibson's price $19.96

Christine Falls

Benjamin Black (aka John Banville)

Booker Prize winner John Banville takes a holiday to write this stylish noir under a pseudonym. (How many other great writers have used pseudonyms to take a walk on the dark side? Julian Barnes and Joyce Carol Oates come to mind ... I wonder why Graham Greene never did?) Anyway, here's a thriller with panache.  Our anti-hero, Quirke, is a 1950s Dublin pathologist with a bad attitude and a murder mystery on his hands...

Publisher price: $14.00

Gibson's price: $11.20

Here are a few more books now featured in our Gibson's Select program. They're discounted 20%, and we hope you'll take a look at them. We think they're all important books.

The Senator's Wife, by Sue Miller

Song Yet Sung, by James McBride

White Mountain Guide: A Centennial Retrospective, by the AMC Staff

and we can't wait for:

The Bin Ladens, by Steve Coll, author of Ghost Wars--coming in April

A Voyage Long and Strange, by Tony Horwitz--coming in May

So Brave, Young, and Handsome, by Leif Enger, author of Peace Like A River--coming in May

... and that's just the beginning.

You can reserve any of these books online or by phone, or,  better yet, come down and browse in person. There's no better way to shop for books.
