Laura's October 2019 pick, 4 of 4

If you're looking for a beach read, this is not the book for you. If you only like books that are light and fluffy, that give you hope for humanity's potential, do not pick up this book. But if you want something that will grab hold of your heart on the very first page and will not let go until long after you've closed the book and had a good solid cry, then you should absolutely read War Girls.

Set approximately 150 years in the future in the middle of a war torn Nigeria, Tochi Onyebuchi's masterpiece of a novel pulls no punches. It follows Onyii and Ifeoma, sisters, child soldiers, and orphans of the brutal war between Nigeria and the fledgling rebel nation of Biafra, as they are repeatedly traumatized both by what they survive at the hands of others and by the heinous acts they themselves are forced to commit.

War Girls deals with hard, violent things. I had to put it down multiple times just to collect myself enough to keep going. It's difficult to read, as it should be. War should never be easy to digest. But it's also beautiful, full to the brim with proud, strong women who fight for the opportunity to live in a better world. It shows that even in the midst of hell on earth, there is love to be found.

Description

Two sisters are torn apart by war and must fight their way back to each other in a futuristic, Black Panther-inspired Nigeria.

The year is 2172. Climate change and nuclear disasters have rendered much of earth unlivable. Only the lucky ones have escaped to space colonies in the sky.

In a war-torn Nigeria, battles are fought using flying, deadly mechs and soldiers are outfitted with bionic limbs and artificial organs meant to protect them from the harsh, radiation-heavy climate. Across the nation, as the years-long civil war wages on, survival becomes the only way of life.

Two sisters, Onyii and Ify, dream of more. Their lives have been marked by violence and political unrest. Still, they dream of peace, of hope, of a future together.

And they're willing to fight an entire war to get there.

Acclaimed author, Tochi Onyebuchi, has written an immersive, action-packed, deeply personal novel perfect for fans of Nnedi Okorafor, Marie Lu, and Paolo Bacigalupi.
