Elisabeth's October 2023 pick

The Farrow women are cursed, and June is just waiting her turn to go mad.

They're normal until they're not, the day that they start seeing things out of the corner of their eye, hear things that aren't there, feel people where there are none. June is the last Farrow, and she lives a patient, cut-flower life, quietly waiting in sepia toned chapters, living a small-town life that has already had the ending written. Quiet determined despair oozes from the page.

And then June begins to see a red door that isn't there.

And through the door is a man who knows her, was married to her, but she doesn't remember him. It's the 1950s now, and she has been here already but not yet, their past is her future.

And the door isn't there anymore, and the townsfolk are wondering where she's been for a few years, and the police are sniffing around asking questions about the thing that happened when she disappeared, questions she doesn't know the answers to because she wasn't there (or hasn't been there, yet).
And the door isn't there.
And here, is the quiet simple life of love and comfortable family that she always wanted but told herself that she didn't, and would it be so bad to stay forever with this quiet steady man who misses his wife who is and isn't her at the same time?
And the door isn't there.

I buddy-read this book with a friend and I feel like an adequate review would be simply screenshots of the messages we sent back and forth to each other, full of emphatic punctuation marks, our hearts in our throats, as we read June's story, worried June's worries, screeched at the book.

"You ruined my life, June, but first you gave me one."
I died. It was amazing. I loved it. There were no dragons.

A GOOD HOUSEKEEPING AND SHE READS BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

In the small mountain town of Jasper, North Carolina, June Farrow is waiting for fate to find her. The Farrow women are known for their thriving flower farm—and the mysterious curse that has plagued their family line. The whole town remembers the madness that led to Susanna Farrow’s disappearance, leaving June to be raised by her grandmother and haunted by rumors.

It’s been a year since June started seeing and hearing things that weren’t there. Faint wind chimes, a voice calling her name, and a mysterious door appearing out of nowhere—the signs of what June always knew was coming. But June is determined to end the curse once and for all, even if she must sacrifice finding love and having a family of her own.

After her grandmother’s death, June discovers a series of cryptic clues regarding her mother’s decades-old disappearance, except they only lead to more questions. But could the door she once assumed was a hallucination be the answer she’s been searching for? The next time it appears, June realizes she can touch it and walk past the threshold. And when she does, she embarks on a journey that will not only change both the past and the future, but also uncover the lingering mysteries of her small town and entangle her heart in an epic star-crossed love.

With The Unmaking of June Farrow, Adrienne Young delivers a brilliant novel of romance, mystery, and a touch of the impossible—a story you will never forget.
