Marjorie Burke returns with a followup to Melting Ice ~ Shifting Sand, presenting her continued caregiver memoirs in Pilgrimage on Ice and Sand: Our Continuing Story Living with Alzheimer's as she continues to care for her beloved husband, Donald. After six years of caring for him at home, it became very clear that it was no longer safe for either of them for him to remain at home. Her decision to move him to long-term memory-care facility, where he could receive specialized care, was difficult but ultimately the best option for both of them.
In Pilgrimage on Ice and Sand, Marge shares their continuing story through poetry, prose, humor and heart breaking antidotes. She writes with honesty of guilt and grief, and how she is traveling through the uncertainty of Donald’s disease whether it is addressing the challenge of communication, watching Donald cope with a fire drill, or making the decision to ask for the palliative care team for help. Marge shares her practical tips for navigating the caregiving journey, taking time for one’s self, re-connecting with friends, letting others help, calling on one’s spirituality, and choosing to look at the small moments of peace as “infinitely more.”
