Dan Zanes' House Party!

Saturday, March 2nd, 2019, 11am

Bring the family and join Grammy award winning children’s performer Dan Zanes and Haitian-American jazz vocalist / music therapist Claudia Eliaza as they sign books and sing songs from Dan Zanes' House Party!: A Family Roots Music Treasury! Along with their brother-in-law, illustrator Donald Saaf, this musical married couple have collected 64 old and new songs from near and far into one comprehensive volume with lyrics, chords, notation, instrument descriptions, suggestions for further listening and reading, artist profiles, song histories, and essays for parents and educators. This is a multicultural music book for the living room and the classroom.

Claudia Eliaza was born in N.H. and grew up in Northern California. She has performed as a jazz vocalist on four continents and while working at The Community Music School in Boston became the first African-American woman in New England to oversee a music therapy program.

Dan Zanes grew up in Concord, N.H. He squandered his youth playing in a rock and roll band called the Del Fuegos. During the past 20 years he has performed in venues from Boston to Bahrain, from thrift shop basements to Carnegie Hall, during this time he released 15 records of all-ages modern day folk music, and appeared on every major children’s television outlet.

Dan and Claudia met in the fall of 2016 and decided, while jamming at Dan’s kitchen table, that they would continue singing together. In the spirit of progress and inclusion they also committed to working with presenters to make all of their concerts sensory friendly. They had big dreams and they’re coming true!

Inspired by their artful folk music and commitment to accessibility, the Kennedy Center commissioned Claudia and Dan to create a theater piece for young audiences. Night Train 57: A Sensory Friendly Comic Folk Opera premiered in October 2017 and has been performed several times since. The soundtrack recording is available on Festival Five Records.

Their love of songs and communal music-making lead to a publishing deal with the Quarto Group USA and the result, a songbook entitled Dan Zanes’ House Party: A Family Roots Music Treasury, was released in late 2018. This has opened the doors to many new conversations with parents, educators, music therapists, and fellow musicians about how to work together to create a healthier, more musical (and ultimately, more equitable), society.

While taking on these projects, Claudia and Dan have continued to bring their music to family shows, school workshops, community sing alongs, and folk festivals throughout the U.S. and into Canada. They take their commitment to accessibility and inclusion with them wherever they go.

And - the icing on the cake - in the midst of it all they were married!
