Olustee: America's Unfinished Civil War Battle, with Greg Ahlgren

Tuesday, July 24th, 2018, 5:30 p.m.

Greg Ahlgren visits Gibson's Bookstore to present the Civil War research he carefully gathered as he researched his newest novel, Olustee: America's Unfinished Civil War Battle, sharing the story of  African-American Union soldiers, wounded and defeated following the Battle of Olustee in February 1864, and executed and murdered by Georgia infantry, considered chattel in servile insurrection, pursuant to the dictates of Jefferson Davis and approved by the Confederate Congress. In 2013 the State of Florida held legislative hearings and refused to allow the construction of a Union monument to these soldiers.

The battle included the NH 7th Volunteer Regiment and that unit, together with its commander, Colonel Joseph Abbott, the former Concord, New Hampshire lawyer and newspaper editor, feature prominently in the novel.

About the author: Author Greg Ahlgren is not only a history and Civil War buff, but also a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a national organization of approximately 6,000 members.

When Tampa area journalist Jason Bauman is tasked to write an article about a Florida legislative hearing regarding the placement of Civil War memorials, as well as the battle whose proposed monument triggered the bill, he figures it’ll be his last easy fluff piece before he heads North to his new job as a political reporter.
