Marie Harris and Rebecca Rule

Tuesday, October 1st, 2019, 6 p.m.

Former NH Poet Laureate Marie Harris and Yankee Storyteller Rebecca Rule share work from their two latest books, just out from Hobblebush Books. Marie’s Desire Lines represents a decade of new work and includes commissioned poems, several of which she wrote during her term as laureate. Becky’s That Reminds Me of a Funny Story is a memoir, how-to, and compendium of Yankee humor. These two old friends get together for an original and entertaining performance.

Desire Lines is Marie's fifth book of poetry—work written over more than a decade. The collection also includes poems commissioned during her tenure as NH Poet Laureate as well as other public poems that have appeared on sculptures, in parks, on postcards and billboards, and even on Twitter!

Marie is also an anthologist who, with her co-editor Kathleen Aguero, edited one of the earliest multicultural anthologies of contemporary American poetry: An Ear to the Ground (Univ of Georgia Press). She has written three children's books: G is for Granite, A NH Alphabet Book; Primary Numbers, A NH Number Book; and The Girl Who Heard Colors, a book about synesthesia. It was named Outstanding Work of Children's Literature by the NH Writers Project in 2016. Marie's research on the alphabet book led her to discover Henniker native Amy Cheney Beach, America's first female composer, herself a synesthete, and she has created a performance in words and music based on the composer's life.

In her career as a Yankee storyteller, Rebecca Rule has traveled throughout New England telling stories and gathering them. One story leads to another. At town halls, historical societies, churches, and senior centers, people have shared stories that connect them to this rocky old place we call home. They’ve shared stories of family, country living, adventures and misadventures, triumphs and “what the heck was that just happened?”
This book is the capstone on a twenty-five year career; the best of the best of these stories are collected here. It is also a memoir of how she came to be a storyteller, why storytelling matters, and what she has learned about the craft in the hundreds of performances she has given.
It’s a book full of characters, insight, heart, and good humor. Careful where you read it because you will be laughing out loud.
